Noivado

O meu amigo Andrew Gray, que hoje suportou comigo a noite eleitoral, deve ser dos poucos jornalistas em Washington que não tem blogue, e ainda bem, porque assim veio parar aqui esta delícia: "Politics as Romance", ou o actual dilema dos democratas;

"You know the whole idea of the Democrats going for Obama is like a
seduction? People have basically been seduced by his charms, let their
hearts rule their heads, chosen the dashing, charming Obama over the
solid, clunky Clinton.

So now I'm thinking you can take this a step further. You're the
early-voting Democrats you have had a whirlwind romance with Obama, a
dashing, tall attractive, relative stranger. And you've got engaged!

But now there is some time before the wedding.

And you're introducing your fiance to their family and friends around
the country. And the family and friends aren't impressed. They think
this guy is a bit flash. They prefer the solid, clunky person you
spurned.

And even you are starting to have doubts. You hope as you get to know
someone better that they will reveal more hidden qualities that will
make you love them even more. But this guy doesn't seem to have any.
He can still smile and do the sweet talk. But that seems to be about
it.

And in fact, just like in any relationship, after the initial
infatuation wears off, you discover he actually has some things about
him that you don't like. He has some friends you don't really approve
of (even his pastor is crazy!) and some annoying habits -- he doesn't
seem to be able to adapt and gets rattled quite easily.

Meanwhile, the spurned suitor is showing a lot of bravery, being
pretty tough, showing they still really want you, and are willing to
fight for you. You don't really like their tone but you can't help
thinking you might be better off with someone like that.

And suddenly you're stuck. Do you call off the engagement or keep
going and hope for the best?

That's the Democrats dilemma, I think!"

Belo texto para fechar a noite, não?

Great analogy!
Although, I basically agree with your perspective, however in my perspective, Obama was enable so far to finish the race due to Hillary perseverance and political agility. She is a very experimented political. So far impressive!!

Except that in this case is not about marriage, but civil unions. Men voters will have to choose between an heterosexual (Clinton) or gay relationship (Obama), while women voters between an heterosexual or lesbian relationship. Of course, voters in Michigan and Florida have more of "coitus interruptus" type of relation.

I know, Democrats are pro-diversity... while Republicans are pro-winning elections.

Cheer-up, Obama and Clinton supporters. Democrats will win...in 2012 ...maybe (Condi Rice will be a tough opponent, then)

Great analogy, I really enjoyed it! Despite I don't agree that Obama is all looks and no content, I believe that Clinton is a representative of the established power (aka lobbies) and as so it isn't already the announced winner. People need hope, Obama campaign is based on hope. I, for once, am willing to believe that hope can beat expertise this time. But, they still need to beat McCain, who has overpassed them both in recent polls...

Fascinating elections. Don't let us down, America. Your fate is tied to everyone's fate...
