"Country First: Service (part II)" - Agenda do dia
A Convenção regressa com o tema do primeiro dia, "Serviço". Segundo explicou o director de campanha, Rick Davis, numa conference call com jornalistas logo pela manhãzinha, a decisão de trocar a programação do segundo dia pelo primeiro tem a ver com a "apresentação da história e personalidade do candidato", que, na sua opinião, é a "mensagem mais importante que não pode deixar de ser comunicada ao público". Alguns elementos do programa previsto para hoje — "Reforma" — serão incorporados na ordem de trabalhos, outros serão "reciclados" nas noites subsequentes, mas a maior parte serão perdidos.
Entre as pessoas que vão passar pelo palco do Xcel Center:
- Um amigo pessoal do casal McCain que adoptou Nicky, uma das duas crianças que a mulher do candidato, Cindy, resgatou de um orfanato no Bangladesh (os McCain adoptaram a outra, Bridget);
- Um companheiro de cela de John McCain no "Hanoi Hilton", o maior centro de prisioneiros de guerra no Vietname;
- Laura Bush e George W. Bush: o Presidente falará aos delegados via satélite a partir da Casa Branca no arranque do "prime time";
- Fred Thompson, o antigo senador e ex-concorrente de McCain pela nomeação republicana, num discurso sobre "A coragem e serviço de John McCain";
- Joe Lieberman, antigo candidato vice-presidencial democrata e senador independente, cuja intervenção intitulada "The original maverick" deverá concentrar-se na ideia do "excepcionalismo americano".
p.s. - Ontem, na sessão abreviada, foram aprovadas as regras de funcionamento da Convenção e adoptada a plataforma política do partido.

"Country First: Service" - Agenda do dia
A programação oficial pré-Gustavo apontava o "Serviço" como o tema para o primeiro dia de trabalhos na Convenção Nacional Republicana. Da longa lista de oradores convocados — Presidente George W. Bush, Vice- Presidente Richard B. Cheney, governadores Tim Pawlenty (Minnesota), Rick Perry (Texas) ou Arnold Schwarzenegger (Califórnia), senador Joseph Lieberman (independente do Conneticut) — só a Primeira-Dama Laura Bush vai passar pelo palco do Xcel Center. Todas as intervenções políticas foram canceladas, mas não o tema do dia: o recinto desportivo onde decorre a Convenção tornou-se um centro de apoio para as populações afectadas pelo furacão Gustavo e os apelos à ajuda, seja por contribuições financeiras ou voluntariado, serão o assunto dos poucos discursos do dia.
